This was my favorite assignment overall for the term. I was proud of my ability to to walk in, talk to the subject, and snap some shots that I was happy to share.

I posted the close up of the espresso shot on my Instagram and tagged Corvallis Coffee Culture, and they reposted my shot on their own page.

This was quite the pat on the back!

Looking back on this assignment, I learned a lot from just diving into this topic. That's something that I hope to continue to work. I often lack in the confidence department, and I hope that I will continue to find ways to work around this fault.

Topic 2

My goals for this term were to not be so shy with my camera, snap quick photos, and to just get my foot in the door.

I think I achieved some of these goals, but I still have quite a bit of w
ork to do in the "shy department." I want to be able to walk into an event, camera in hand, just knowing that I am there to get the scoop. I want to be confident in my work. I don't want my anxiety of large crowds to hold me back anymore.

This coming year, I want to continue to contribute to The Commuter. Photo J has been a great stepping stone.

The end of this term is hopefully not the end of my photojournalism experience. I would still like to dabble in the field of photo J. I think I have some growing to do as a photographer, but I enjoy it as a hobby.

I have this bad habit of not liking to be told what to do with my creativity... Photojournalism is basically a prime example of this pet peeve.

I just need to learn how to combine my creativity with finding the perfect compelling subject to tell a story.

In the fall, I would like to continue to work with The Commuter and grow as a photojournalist. Just taking picture to go with each story that I write will fore me to gain experience and confidence in my photo-taking-abilities.

Topic 2

My favorite, hands down is Margaret Bourke-White. Her work is breathtaking.

The way she captures such captivating images while still telling such a compelling story... Can I have some of your talent please?

Her images are kind of raw, and bare, but they don't need modern edits to enhance the subject I think. She reminds me of a post-era Banksy. Banksy is a graffiti artist, but his work always brings up controversial topics with society, and I think that Bourke-White does this with her photography.

Just looking at the example of The Daily Graphic in the history section of the text makes me realize how much journalism has changed. I can't imagine how much time and patience it must have taken to all of these sketches.

Journalism is so fast pace now. We want quick shots and snappy headlines. I see this as a benefit to the journalism world.

Journalism is about giving to the people. Letting the people of our society know what is going on in the world. By not spending hours on end doodling up the photo of the burning house, we can tweet that image in a jiffy.

While the drawings are impressive, journalism is more about giving the people what they want, and they want it NOW.

Topic 2

For my photo story, I really would like to go to a farmers market and photograph the process of preparing the tables.

This could be considered a feature story; showcasing the process of something for an event.

I want to do this because as summer approaches, farmers markets are a place to go for fresh summer produce. It is time sensitive and appealing.

My image ideas are to maybe get some of the preparation of the fruit; maybe the cleansing process. The table preparation and the arrangements. Then also, customers lurking through the hundreds of cantaloupe in search of the perfect one for their fruit salad.

For my sports/ action photo I intend to shoot some photos of the outdoor sports on campus. For example, the outdoor soccer players that kick a ball around on sunny afternoons. Usually, OSU holds scrimmage games on Thursdays (or so I have heard), so I would like to go catch them in action. I used to be a soccer player, so this is the one sport that I can tolerate and would want to sit and watch long enough to snap photos.

For the OVERALL photo, I think that the team spread out over the field would be a good shot.
The MEDIUM photo could be a post-goal victory shot of the teammates celebrating.
My CLOSE UP shot could be a snap of the goalie's face as they dive for a ball.
MY HOMETOWN project.

1. I have been thinking about doing Salem, Oregon. I live fairly close to Salem, and with it being our state's capitol it has several landmarks that make it a good subject. Everyone knows where Salem is, so capturing some cozy shots of a the big city could make it more relevant to small town residents.

2. I am thinking about going around downtown and maybe snapping some shots of small businesses. There are several small businesses that are well respected in the community. I was also thinking about going to the capitol building because it is the most obvious and well-known landmark in Salem.

3. I think that the small business one. Getting permission to go into a business and take photos is kind of hard. Sometimes business owners don't really care, but other times they have a problem with people taking photos in their store.

Topic 2

My favorite photo was the one of the bride holding a photo of one of her loved one's from the service. This photo just captured a lot of emotion. Not all weddings are rainbows and sunshine. People experience grief for the one's who may not have been able to attend, and I think that Karl did a goo job of this. (my laptop wouldn't save the image for some reason, so here's the link)

Questions for Karl:

1. What made you want to make photography a profession?

2. Have you ever worked as a photojournalist, for a newspaper?

3. What is your biggest challenge, and greatest achievement, as a photographer?
She is famous on Instagram for her collection called "The Atlas of Beauty."

This is my favorite photo by Noroc.
The speckles of light shining on the
subjects face provides a whimsical vibe.
Her facial expression is restful and pure. The vibrant colors
pop with the dark toned back ground.

Noroc discovered her passion for photography when she was 17. She grew up in Romania, and when she was 27, she quit her life there to explore the beauty of the world.

It was traveling during vacations that started making her realize the beauty in diversity. At the age of 27 she put her savings and efforts into a project.

Her blog "The Atlas of Beauty" is a collection of portraits of women in various cultures that she take while she from country to country. She has been devoted to "The Atlas of Beauty" for three years.

Her photography stood out to me because she her passion really shows in her work. Each photo has a unique sense of self, but with a continued sense of style that ties all the photos together.

She strives to show appreciation for the women in diverse cultures who work hard for their goals. She wants to not only capture their outer beauty, but their inner beauty; showing them how truly beautiful they are.

In the code of ethics #4 stood out to me the most. It reads:

"Treat all subjects with respect and dignity. Give special consideration to vulnerable subjects an compassion to victims of crime or tragedy..."

This makes me think of how the media handles crime and tragedy. I think instead of treating victims with compassion, media companies focus on who is getting the news out first. Is it ethical to treat each subject only like a story to gain credibility? Not in my opinion.

In the "Ideally, Photojournalists Should" section the very last sentence in #7 is what caught my eye:

"Photojournalists should continuously study their craft and the ethics that guide it."

No matter how successful a person may think they are, they are never too successful to learn. Each day is an opportunity to learn. Reminders are important as well. Especially in journalism; a world that is constantly growing and evolving.
Topic 2

My two photos that I liked from the other students in photo J are:

I am really digging this depth of field and lighting. It's an action shot, but it's not too busy.

Alyssa's mug shot of this woman is so beautiful. I think the light is just right on her face, and the sharpness of the image is very realistic. It's not a harsh photo, like in your face. It's more soft. Overall, a great shot!

For my Environmental Portrait assignment, I was thinking of doing one of the music instructors on campus. Raymund Ocampo is one that comes to mind. There is several others who teach music theory, voice lessons, guitar, and piano. Snapping a photo of them in action, mid jam session, would be so great. Capturing that joy of their hobby would emphasize who they are as a person as well.

My second option for this project was the idea of going to a local Crovallis coffee shop and snapping a few photos of the baristas at work. Coffee is the love of my life, so capturing the making of pure joy would bring me joy. I have always loved watching them make the coffee, so picking a barista to take photos of might be neat! Coffee shop options might be Starbucks, Imagine Coffee, or Coffee Culture.

My best photo, or the photo I like the most is this one of LB student Maddy. I like it because the sun is shining and she looks so happy. I think that the light is borderline too bright, but I kind of like that. The subject is not completely centered in this photo, but close, and I like that.

Hey, Rob!

This is like the millionth class you have had me in where I have had to "tell you about myself" on my blog, but here it goes...

I am currently a student at LBCC. A student who changes her mind about what major I want to be every five minutes. I have committed to finishing the journalism courses provided through LB to put my passion for writing to the test.

I have always loved to write. I grew up keeping a journal and writing cheesy short stories. Outside the realm of writing, I love to dabble in anything and everything related to music. I also really enjoy being outside in nature. Trees make me happy. Netflix also a big part of my life. Netflix and I are in a committed relationship.

Topic 2:

Goals... Let's see...

1. Get over being SO dang shy!
2. Learn to snap quick, artsy, angled photos. Pictures that make people WANT TO READ MY STORIES
3. Get out and about to take awesome photos for my blog

Topic 3:

Subject ideas:

1. Green house; what's going on over there? Horticulture activities? Can anyone go there?
2. Spring plays (theater department); two plays for the term
3. Athletics; baseball starts this week (not to step on Brian's toes)

She actually helped my through the editing process. I had her read it to make sure all my facts were perfect before it got leaked to the public.

She was very flattered by my words. She even shared a link to my article on her Facebook account.

She made a few suggestions here and there to make the story flow better, but other than that she didn't really give me any feed back that "would have made it better."

The talk with Kyle Odegard was both educational and entertaining.

Three thing that I took away from speaking Kyle was:
1. Your skills are more important than your degree. I have heard this before, but hearing it from a professional source was just a clarification.
2. Don't be too creative. Just get to the point.
3. He uses media updates for the Gazette Times on his phone.

These tips are great for aspiring journalists. Working at the Commuter is building my experience or my portfolio in a sense. Also, learning to write, savvy news is the good way to get a quality story our fast that will grab the reader's attention. Then, being the social media editor for the Commuter, the media alerts was just a great tip to stay on top of trending topics in the media.

She later began to write on her own. She published short stories in elementary school and handed out hand-crafted books made from pieces of paper she had stapled together. She also enjoyed taking scraps of magazines and making “cutout booklets” with the words and pictures.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; line-height: 1.38; white-space: pre-wrap;"> ”My life felt like a reality TV show,” said Lamplugh.

After working on the Commuter team for a year as a reporter, Lamplugh wanted to get more experience in the presentation of newspapers. She was elected as the Editor in Chief of the Commuter working alongside the Managing Editor at the time, Chris Trotchie.

Between the two stories that we have posted, I would say that story #2 was my favorite. Honestly, it is probably my favorite story that I have EVER written for the commuter.

Stepping outside of my normal bubble, I went to this event, took notes, snapped some shots, and interviewed people. It was absolutely terrifying in an absolutely satisfying way.

Pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and embrace this job has been one the biggest challenges. I not only struggle with this in the office, but in my life. Taking risks and trusting my instincts has never been a task that I have felt comfortable with.

Working for the Commuter has been the most eye opening opportunity for me. I have went through phases of, "I hate this," "I'm a horrible writer," to even, "Why hasn't New York Times called me yet?"

I wish that I could be half the writer that Edna is. She insires me to the extreme. She has talent, courage, and drive.

One of my favorite moments so far is when she forced her boss to give her the respect she deserved. She was a female journalist who often got forgotten, but when a car caught fire and the pin-headed-male-journalist didn't even think to stop, the editor knew that Edna would have never passed up the chance for a story like that.

Earning the respect of your readers is one thing, but being granted the credit from the editor is a whole different task.

A skill that I would like to improve on is my confidence as a writer. Just to have faith in my ability to write a quality article.

Topic 2

My subject for my profile piece is going to be our very own ALLISON LAMPLUGH.

She has been a staff member at the Commuter, and now she spreading her wings to brighter horizons. I want to know how Allison found the confidence, the drive, and the resources to move outside of the LB newspaper.

Profiles are such great pieces to write. If I could come up with two suspects to interview for a profile, I would want to do maybe an LB Commuter alumni, or maybe a student doing a study abroad program.

These are both interesting options to me. The LB Commuter one would give great tips on how to be successful in the journalism world, and also give us a look into the upbringing/ journey of it all.

The study abroad topic was something that I recently heard about. Maybe looking into students who are dual-enrolled, and seeing how they can make that happen. Studying abroad has always been a hope for me in my college career at some point.

Five questions I could ask subject #1:

1. Ask about the upbringing, childhood, dreams for future when younger.
2. Schooling, college, work experience.
3. Does journalism make you happy? Do you feel like this is your "calling?"
4. Tips for upcoming journalists.
5. Hobbies outside of writing/ journalism. Hopes for the future.
